The Romanesque Monument style is also widespread in the area of Lecco. Many churches both small and large, and buildings belonging to this style. The first of which and probably the most important is located in San Pietro al Monte above the town of Civate which took its name from the name of the Church of San Pietro al Monte and Oratory of Saint Benedetto. The church dates back to the XI century. Of inestimable value are the frescoes in the Italian Romanesque style representing the triumph of good over evil with the defeat of the dragon by the Archangel Michael. In Lavello of the town of Calolziocorte there is the site of the monastery and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Lavello, located just a few steps from the river Adda. The Sanctuary conserves interesting frescoes dating back to the XV, XVI and XVII century. Driving on the SS36 which follows the shoreline of the lake, and visit Piona where you will find an abbey dating from the eleventh century donated to the Cistercian monks in 1937 who still keep the structure functioning today. In nearby Corenno Plinio it is worth making a stop just to admire the castle built in the tenth century, and the parish church dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury.
